Little Island Pond Association

Water Quality Summary

2001 Summer Season

August 30, 2001

Water tests were conducted on a weekly basis, unless test results warranted re-testing. Beginning June 23, 2001 and concluding August 26, 2001. Tests were taken in 5 rotating areas around the pond, with bi-weekly attention to the inlet areas.

I would like to thank Bob Doucot, Darcy & Katie Pinette, Pete Bajor and Bob Berthieume for their assistance throughout the summer.

All tests in all areas were below the State Standard for swimable waters (88 PPM). Two areas prompted retesting, Woekel Beach and an area approximately 120 yards east of Campbell Beach.

The Woekel Beach re test was due to a shoreline resident hand digging a septic system 35 feet from the water, leaving an open pit which drained into the lake during rainfall. The Pelham Health Inspector was made aware of the situation and rectified the problem. The first test which was done by the health inspector 2 days after a significant rainfall was at 50 PPM. The re-test was conducted by the Association a week later which came up at 4 PPM. Testing has been done on a regular basis as this is also one of the inlet areas.

The cause of high readings in the area east of Campbell beach is undetermined.

Saturday, August 25 I was alerted of a substance in the water by a shorefront resident On Woekel Circle. This was a dark cotton like substance suspended in the water. There was also a film and small bubbles on the surface. If you dipped a cup in the water this film would stick to the sides. E-coli tests were performed in the immediate area and approximately 50 feet in the direction of flow. BOTH OF THESE TESTS WERE NEGATIVE OF E-COLI CULTURES. I searched the DES website and found an iron eating bacteria. On Monday I called Jodi Conner at the DES, he confirmed this substance was a form of iron bacteria.
